The purpose of this field manual is to provide a standardized source document for Army-wide reference on map reading and land navigation. This manual applies to every soldier in the Army regardless of service branch, MOS, or rank. This manual also contains both doctrine and training guidance on these subjects. Part One addresses map reading and Part Two, land navigation. The appendixes include a list of exportable training materials, a matrix of land navigation tasks, an introduction to orienteering, and a discussion of several devices that can assist the soldier in land navigation.
Great supplement to buying a compass to learn how to use it. Learn about navigating different terrain (desert, mountain, jungle arctic).

I bought my copy of FM 21-26 from cando723 and, unfortunately, it appears to be a pocket edition because it is small enough to fit into the cargo pocket of a pair of BDUs (it's roughly 5"x7"x approximately 3/8" thick). If this is an official Department of the Army publication, I've never seen one like it in 15 years of active duty service, but it it's possible. The the terrain feature illustrations are so small and indistinct, you can almost make out what some of them are. The text is very small (roughly a 4 or 5 point size font), but readable, if you have 20/20 vision or better.I bought this as a refresher course, since it's been nearly two decades since I actually used these skills, and it looks like I'll need to buy another, full size, copy in order to read it without giving myself a massive headache. I highly recommend that you communicate with the seller to find out the size of their copy before purchase. FM 21-26 is most definitely worth buying if you want to learn map reading and land navigation, because it gives you all you need to know in clear and concise chapters with illustrations without a lot of extraneous verbiage.

Was very happy with the book
The bible to land navigation training. We use this for supplemental references and "authoritative" back up when teaching this topic.
